High-input voltage-capable synchronous forward controller with active clamp transformer reset

Linear Technology Corp. has introduced a high-input voltage-capable synchronous forward controller, the LT3752/LT3752-1. This controller is designed with an active clamp transformer reset and has an integrated housekeeping controller to bias the primary and secondary ICs which maintains a controlled VOUT start-up and shut-down. The internal bias generation drastically reduces the complexity and size of main power transformers by avoiding the need for extra windings to create bias supplies.
The LT3752 operates over a wide range of input voltages, from 6.5-to-100-V. It is capable of handling hybrid vehicle (HV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications in the LT3752-1 model. The LT3752-1 can handle inputs up to 400 V with RC start-up from the input voltage, limited only by the choice of external components.
Obtaining a 5% output voltage regulation is possible without using an optocoupler. If an optocoupler is used, 1.5% output voltage regulation can be attained. The LT3752/-1 uses a pulse transformer to send a control signal to a secondary-side MOSFET driver for synchronous rectification timing. It can also be used in self-driven applications, with the power transformer pulsing controlling the secondary-side MOSFETs.
The LT3752/-1 also allows startups at 0 V output voltage, eliminating the need for startup circuitry for secondary-side ICs, enabling a controlled VOUT start-up.
With a programmable 100-to-500-kHz operating switching frequency, the LT3752/-1 can be synchronized to an external clock. This allows a range of output inductor values and transformer sizes to be used.
The LT3752/-1 is available in a TSSOP-38 package with several pins removed for high-voltage spacing. Its E- and I-grade versions function from a 40C-to-125C junction temperature while the H-grade functions from a 40C-to-150C operating junction temperature. The LT3752/-1 MP-grade functions from 55C-to-150C operating junction temperature.
